Sixteen

By the next night, the village had transformed into a magical festival wonderland. The fae lights that hung in the trees and typically had a yellow glow were now a rainbow of colors to represent the different kinds of fae magic. Each shop and tavern had a booth set up with different food, beverage, artisan goods, and a wide array of crafts. Several bands and musicians were stationed about. Each had its own musical style. Somehow, each sound was distinct.

The population of the village was more than I had imagined. So many fae, of all kinds, filled the streets. They all seemed to be in harmony with one another. They all mingled with one another. Typically you would see each type of fae only interact with their kind, here it was like a huge melting pot.

The fae wine flowed. Several people walked around with carafes full of it and kept everyone's glasses full. Daphne and I once again refrained from drinking any. To be honest, after what happened the last time we enjoyed it, I am not sure if either of us would partake ever again.

We all were gifted clothing from a local clothier that had been dropped off early this morning. Daphne wore a beautiful golden cap-sleeve dress. The sweeping train cape made of silk gave her an ethereal look. Xander and Ron both wore matching dark blue, long-sleeve shirts and pants, each embellished with purple embroidery.

My heart skipped a beat when I saw Darius in his dark red tailcoat with matching golden embroidery on his vest. He smiled when he finally saw me. His eyes went straight to the deep V neckline that exposed much of my chest. I loved my dress. It was made with dark green tulle, and little golden flowers were embroidered on transparent, long puff sleeves.

Darius stepped before me and gently lifted my chin. “Beautiful,” he said as he gently kissed my lips.

“We must stop by the clothier and thank them. They truly did an amazing job. This is some of the best craftsmanship I had ever seen. It reminds me of my clothier that made all my dresses before,” I paused, “Everything.”

“I wasn’t talking about the clothes,” Darius chuckled. I heard Xander cough under his breath. Both Darius’ and my attention turned to Xander.

“Ron and I are going to explore the festival. We met some dark fae yesterday, and we're going to see if we can find them,” Xander said, his eyes darting around a bit. I watched as he nervously pulled at the hem of his sleeves. It has been a long time since he has been around this many people.

“Don’t get into too much trouble,” Daphne said with a smile. “Sabrina, you have to come check out some of the food offerings! The things I have tried have been utterly delectable!” Daphne grabbed my hand and pulled me to follow her. I turned to Darius and motioned for him to come with us. He followed close behind us with his shoulders back and his eyes slowly scanning.
